The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Tusk, Safaricom PLC and Huawei Technologies (Kenya) Co., Ltd. have today unveiled a new identity for the Lewa Safari Marathon.

The world-renowned sporting event will now be known as The Lewa Safari Marathon, powered by Huawei and Safaricom PLC.

For 20 years the marathon -held on Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, co-organised by Tusk and title sponsored by Safaricom PLC – has allowed participants from all over the globe to compete in an internationally acclaimed annual event whilst running through one of Africa’s most breath-taking wildlife conservancies.

Regarded as one of the toughest marathons in the world, runners of all abilities have taken part – from elite professionals like Marathon World Record Holder Eliud Kipchoge to amateur runners and walkers.

Over and above its identity as a sporting event, the marathon is a vehicle for the advancement of education, healthcare and conservation efforts in Kenya and across Africa, raising close to Ksh. 800,000,000 for these causes since the year 2000.

As lead co-sponsors, Safaricom has partnered with Huawei to support the marathon in its innovation, evolution and growth.

Speaking at the marathon launch, Mike Watson, CEO of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy said: “What Safaricom has done for the marathon for the last 20 years is incomparable and the event would not have achieved its global recognition without Safaricom’s unyielding support.

We are very pleased to welcome Huawei, who have been long-standing partners of the event, on board as co-lead sponsors as we look to the future.”

“When we look back, we are grateful that we have been part of the success of the marathon, having started with less than 200 runners at the first event to the over 1,400 who now take part every year.

The beneficiaries of the marathon are a testament of what happens when we come together and give attention to our wildlife and the environment around us.

We are excited to be partnering with Huawei for this edition as lead co-sponsors and look forward to an exciting event”, Said Michael Joseph, CEO, Safaricom

Charlie Mayhew CEO of Tusk shared, “We are extremely proud of how this unique event has captured the imagination of runners from all over the world and continues each year to raise very significant funds for a wide range of conservation, education and community initiatives across Kenya, We are immensely grateful to Safaricom and Huawei once again to have their generous support.”

Addressing Huawei’s new role as co-lead sponsor, Stanley Shenlei, Huawei’s Key Account Director , said, “The positive impact that the Lewa Conservancy has on the wildlife and surrounding communities is truly incredible, and the marathon plays a crucial role in enabling that. Over the last 12 years we have donated over 100m KES and we know that every shilling is making a real difference.

We are delighted to be lead co-sponsor this year with Safaricom to support its ongoing success”.

This year’s marathon will be held at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy on 27th June. Registrations will open online at at 8.30 am on 5th March. Please contact for any queries on the race.
