As the debate on Building Bridges Initiative bill continues, a section of constitutional lawyers now wants BBI proponents to engage the mwananchi fully before collecting their signatures for the change of the constitution.
Led by Shadrack Wambui the lawyers say that the BBI team should conduct thorough public participation on the BBI document to help them understand the content of Bill.
“Changing the constitution through popular initiative like that of the BBI, the team must involve thorough public participation because when you sign, then you have agreed with the changes and content of the bill so when you involve them and they sign it means they have participated,” he said.
Through the same he says much opposition can be avoided once the BBI bill lands in county assemblies.
Already Nandi and Kericho Assemblies are in court seeking an advisory on whether they should add public views in the BBI bill or not.
