Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor popularly known as Jalang’o has insisted that event organizers holding events in Lang’ata constituency must give Lang’ata youths a chance to work with them.

Jalang’o in a phone conversation with Brekko show host Majimaji, says that the jobs he is advocating for are not technical jobs that need a lot of skills.

He says that they are menial jobs like ticketing, waiting tables, cleaning and even security jobs that come with the events.

“Vijana mtaani lazima wafanye kazi, siyo eti event iko mtaani na sisi tunaangalia kama wageni. Na jobs tunataka siyo zile ngumu. Ni jobs kama ticketing, waiters, cleaning and even security,” said Jalang’o.

Lang’ata hub of events

According to Jalang’o, his constituents are complaining over lack of jobs and yet Lang’ata is the hub for many events.

Jalang’o on Monday elicited mixed reactions after he made a controversial statement giving a condition to event organizers to give area youths jobs or the event will not happen.

“New guideline, if you are hosting an event in Lang’ata venues and you don’t give our young people a chance to work at your event, that event will not happen… 50 percent of jobs must from Langata youths ama uende ufanye event kwenyu. Don’t say we did not tell you!” said Jalang’o.

Lang’ata is arguably one of Kenya’s hub for local and international events, being home to venues like Carnivore, Uhuru Gardens, Nyayo Stadium among others.
