Vybz Kartel’s legal fees will be paid by the Jamaican government as ordered by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Kartel and his co-defendants are set to receive the hefty payments in the appeal against their 2014 murder conviction.
Kartel and the other appellants overturned their murder conviction last month after the Privy Council ruled that they were not accorded a fair trial.
The case was later sent back before the Court Of Appeal in Jamaica with the hearing set for June 10th to 14th, 2024.
According to the set guidelines, a loser pays the legal fees for the winner.
In this regard, the Jamaican government will have to cover Vybz Kartel, Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St. John’s legal fees together with their legal teams.
A report from the Privy Council to the King of England affirmed that Jamaica is still regarded as a colony of England.
It further opined that the Crown (Jamaican Government) should bear the costs incurred by the appellants.

“His Majesty was pleased by and with the advice of his Privy Council to approve the report and to order that those charged with administering the Government of Jamaica to pay costs to the appellants” partly read the report.
It is not yet known how much the appellants are set to receive. However, word is out that the amount could be in tens of millions.

Large Number Of Attorneys
Kartel and his co-accused were represented by a large number of lawyers amounting to fourteen.
The team also included three of the finest King’s Counsel lawyers from England among other senior lawyers from Jamaica.
The legal minds included Shawn Campbell, Julian Malins KC, Bert Samuels, Thalia Maragh, Linda Hudson, Bianca Samuels and Isat Buchanan under Simons Muirhead and Burton LLP.
Kartel’s wing had David Hislop KC, Isat Buchanan and Alessandra LaBeach under Simons Muirhead and Burton LLP.
