Julius Yego’s journey in javelin is a remarkable one, earning him the moniker “YouTube Man” for teaching himself the sport by watching online videos.

His career boasts significant achievements, including a world title in 2015 with a monumental 92.72-meter throw and an Olympic silver medal at the Rio 2016 Games.

Despite facing challenges in recent years, including early exits from the last two World Championships, Yego’s 2025 season indicates a strong comeback.

He opened his season with modest throws of 78.52 m in Doha and 78.74 m in Nairobi.

However, his recent performances in Finland demonstrate a clear upward trajectory. Just six days before his Turku victory, he secured a win in Lahti with an 82.95-meter throw, setting the stage for his continued improvement.

Dominating the Elite Field in Turku

The Paavo Nurmi Games, named in honor of Finland’s legendary nine-time Olympic champion, is a prestigious event on the athletics calendar, attracting top javelin throwers.

Yego’s winning throw of 83.08 m came on his fourth attempt, showcasing his ability to deliver under pressure.

His series of throws in Turku also included 78.85 m, 81.94 m, and 82.26 m, demonstrating consistent high-level performance.

He faced a formidable field, including Poland’s Cyprian Mrzyglod, who finished second with a season-best 82.90 m, and Finland’s Toni Keranen, who took third with 81.96 m.

Notably, Yego also bested the 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott, who placed fourth with 81.91 m, marking Walcott’s second loss to Yego this year.

After the event, Yego expressed his satisfaction, stating, “My target was the 85-meter mark, but I’m happy to improve my season best in such a strong field.”

Setting Sights on Tokyo 2025

With his current season-best of 83.08 m, Yego is now just 2.42 meters shy of the 85.50-meter qualification standard for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. This narrow gap suggests he is well-positioned to achieve the mark.

Yego’s schedule includes key upcoming competitions that will be crucial for his qualification bid.

He is set to compete at the Paris Diamond League on June 20, followed by the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru, India, on July 5.

These events will provide him with further opportunities to demonstrate consistency and reach the qualifying distance.

As Yego continues to refine his technique and build momentum, each throw reinforces his legacy as a prominent figure in Kenyan athletics and a strong contender on the international stage.
