Kenya’s Junior Starlets, the national under-17 women’s football team, departed for Yaoundé, Cameroon, on Wednesday with their sights set on qualifying for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The team faces a significant hurdle in their quest, having suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Cameroon in the first leg of the final qualifying round. That match took place at Nyayo Stadium last Sunday.

The decisive second leg is scheduled for Friday. A victory in this return match would secure Kenya’s place in the prestigious World Cup tournament, which is set to be hosted in Morocco this coming November.

Support and Promises

Prior to the team’s departure, the Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, visited the Junior Starlets’ training camp. During his visit, he offered words of encouragement to the young players, urging them to maintain their focus and take pride in representing their country.

He commended their dedication and hard work throughout the qualification journey. “These young women have shown remarkable strength and resilience,” Mwangi stated. “Reaching this final stage is a testament to their spirit and determination. They have promised to fight for a win, and we, as a nation, will provide them with our full support. Our aim is to nurture and sustain their passion for football.”

Mwangi also pledged that the team would receive rewards, not only as a form of motivation for the crucial upcoming match but also as a recognition of their efforts and achievements thus far.

The team captain, Halima Imbachi, addressed the pressure the team is feeling and offered an apology for the loss in the home leg. “We are truly sorry that we could not secure a win on Kenyan soil,” Imbachi said. “We humbly request that you continue to support us and keep us in your prayers. We have undergone rigorous training and have worked diligently to rectify the mistakes we made in the first match. We are prepared to fight with all our strength and bring home a victory for Kenya.”

Imbachi passionately appealed to Kenyans to unite and stand behind the Junior Starlets as they face this critical challenge.

Coach Believes in Victory

Head coach Mildred Cheche expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overturn the deficit and secure qualification. “This is undoubtedly a significant game, but we are ready to face it head-on,” Cheche asserted. “In many ways, Cameroon has more pressure on them, having secured the first-leg advantage. We demonstrated our capabilities in the second half of the previous match, creating numerous scoring opportunities.”

Coach Cheche emphasized the need for the team to play with greater speed and to aim for an early goal in the second leg. “Mental fortitude will be key,” she added. “The girls possess the necessary spirit and determination. Now, we need to channel our skills and tactical abilities to achieve the win.”

Securing qualification for the World Cup would be a historic achievement for Kenyan football. The Junior Starlets made their debut in the global tournament in the Dominican Republic in 2024, and qualifying for a second consecutive World Cup would be a monumental accomplishment, underscoring the growth and potential of women’s football in Kenya.

The team is resolute in their determination to make their nation proud. Since the first leg, they have been diligently working on addressing their weaknesses and refining their strategies. Football fans across Kenya are filled with hope that the Junior Starlets will deliver a stellar performance in Yaoundé and achieve their World Cup dream.

The Junior Starlets carry the hopes and aspirations of the entire nation as they embark on this crucial second leg. Their unwavering determination and cohesive teamwork have been instrumental in their journey to this final qualification hurdle. Kenya’s football community is united in their support, fervently cheering them on.

A victory in Cameroon could have a profound impact, inspiring countless more young girls across the country to pursue their passion for football. The team is fully prepared to fight for their World Cup dream and etch their names in Kenyan football history.
