A French politician is pushing for the stripping of citizenship and awards won by football star, Karim Benzema over his links with the Muslim Brotherhood.

In a televised interview, The French Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin affirmed Benzema’s links with the outlawed group.

“Benzema is notoriously linked with the Muslim Brotherhood, we all know it” he stated.

However, Benzema’s legal team have termed the allegations as ‘false and unfounded’.

Strip His Nationality

The statement refuting the claims from Benzema’s lawyer’s didn’t stop the heat on Benzema.

A French senator and vice -president of the conservative  Les Republicains party, Valerie Boyer demanded the revocation of Benzema’s French nationality.

Currently, Benzema holds dual Algerian and French citizenship. He plays for the French national team as well as playing at club level in Saudi Arabia.

Extremist Group

The Muslim Brotherhood is an international Islamic political and social organization.

The group is advocating for the adherence to Islamic values and principles in governance.

Muslim Brotherhood further has links to other groups which have been deemed extremists.

In Saudi Arabia, the Muslim Brotherhood is an outlawed group.

However, in a sudden turn of events the Senator’s statement seems omitted from the internet.

Karim Benzema moved to Saudi Arabia’s club, Al-Ittihad earlier this year in a 200 million pound transfer.

Previously, he featured for Real Madrid and Lyon.

Benzema has also had his fare share of controversies for his 2010 allegations of having sex with an underage prostitute.

However, In 2014 the case was dropped for lack of sufficient evidence.

In 2015, Benzema was caught in another storm for blackmailing another French footballer over a sex tape recorded with a mobile phone.

In 2021, Benzema was found guilty and handed a suspended sentence including a fine.
