The JKIA Law Courts have granted detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) permission to detain Philip Nahashon Aroko for seven days in connection with the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were. Aroko, the suspected mastermind behind the killing, will be held at Kileleshwa Police Station.

State prosecutor Gikui Gichui had applied for a 30-day detention period, arguing that detectives needed more time to complete investigations.

“The suspect’s phone, which is already in our possession, contains crucial information that could unravel the intricate plot behind the MP’s murder,” Gichui told the court.

She added that Aroko allegedly transferred money just before the killing, which is believed to have been used to pay the assailants.

“There is a clear money trail that the DCI must follow. Releasing the suspect now could compromise the investigation’s integrity,” she said.

Gichui further told the court that Aroko had previously threatened the MP.

“There is a real concern that, if released, he could interfere with witnesses and ongoing investigations.”

In opposition, Aroko, who represented himself in court, denied the prosecution’s claims and asked for leniency on medical grounds.

“I am currently under medication, and prolonged detention will deteriorate my health,” he said. “I voluntarily presented myself to the police when called. The allegation that I am a flight risk is unfounded.”

The court also directed that two other suspects in the case—Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, alias Abdul Rashid, and Dennis Sewe Munyasi—be detained at different police stations for 20 days as investigations proceed.
