The Ministry of Education has unveiled the Kenya Education Management System (KEMIS) to centralize data on education at all levels of the education system.
According to the Ministry of Education, KEMIS will harmonize education data in the National Education Management System (NEMIS), Technical Vocational Education Management Information System (TVET-MIS), and Higher Education Management Information System (HEMIS).

The system will serve as a single source of truth and a one-stop shop for all information about learners and other critical aspects of education.
Machogu said the web-based system will guarantee access to accurate data for planning and strategic decision-making on various aspects of education.
“The system will harmonise the management of data on education from Early Grade levels to higher education,” the CS said.
KEMIS will also allow the tracking of all learners from Pre-primary, Primary, and Secondary, middle-level colleges as well as university education.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu held a stakeholder forum at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to discuss the scope of the envisioned system.

The meeting attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Embu and, the Chairman of, the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee, Prof. Daniel Mugendi Njiru, Chief Executive Officers from state corporations in the Ministry, officials from the Kenya Primary School Heads Association and the Kenya Heads of Secondary Schools.
The Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms in their recommendations sought that KEMIS capture all learners from basic education institutions.
Where a learner is not registerable due to reasons which may include, lack of national identity card or being above 18 years old, the county director of education shall handle each case on its merit and where the reasons given are merited, the learner will be registered on KEMIS.
