copy-of-collinsinjeraKenya sevens Head Coach Innocent “Namcos “ Simiyu has defended the exclusion of HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series top scorer Collins Injera from the Dubai Sevens traveling squad.

The team finally left for Dubai Sevens on Monday November 28, 2016 three days to the competition after a long week of go slows as far as bonuses are concerned.

Speaking at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport before leaving, Namcos defended Injera’s exclusion saying:“Injera is a brilliant player and I don’t think any coach in the world would not want him in his team but also you have to do good to the player because we started late and we didn’t get an opportunity to get where his physical state is.”

Namcos on his side hopes the issues that have been following them in the past few weeks will not affect their performance in Dubai as they prepare to play Australia, France and Japan in pool D.

“We have some very exciting new players and a good blend of experienced and new players and for us the experience players of course we will lead that transformation and we believe the players will be ready to compete by Friday”

The team faces a task of maintain at position seven that they finished in 2015/2016 season under Benjamin Ayimba after coming down from position 13.

“For us in terms of performance the benchmark is 10 points per tournament but of course we will be giving it a shot and hoping we can play in the main cup semis”, said Namcos

Amonde concluded that “The target is very high we are expecting nothing short of a win, we are targeting to win more than two legs now because it’s something we’ve done before and we know we can make it”.

Kabras Sugar’s Dan Sikuta and Homeboyz’ Cyprian Kuto return to the team after missing out in the previous season.

Those retained from last season include Frank Wanyama, Willy Ambaka, Leonard Mugaisi, Augustine Lugonzo, Billy Odhiambo and Nelson Oyoo as well as the skipper Amonde. Martin Owila formerly of Nakuru is also in as two players; Brian Tanga and Darwin Mukidza are in line to make their World Series debuts.
