Veteran Vitimbi t.v drama actress Aisha Khabere Matindo commonly known as Mama Kayai who played the role of the late Mzee Ojwang’s wife has pointed out the lack of proper recognition that that came with winning awards.
The celebrated actress revealed that no monetary value was given with the award to show appreciation during their hey days.
“Awards za Kenya hazinifurahishi.. Unapatiwa award na wanakusahau, niko nazo na sioni ka zinanisaidia,ata huwa sitaki kuziangalia kwa sababu hazinisaidii, tangu nianze kupewa award sijawahi kupata ata shilingi,” said Mama Kayai.
Road To Vitimbi
She landed the role on Vitimbi after being persuaded by Lucy Wangui who acted as a judge,she passed the auditions and was given the role which she played for more than fifteen years.
“Role ya Vitimbi nilienda nikakutana na Lucy Wangui huyo judge, yeye ndio aliniambia kuna part mahali utajaribu kwenda nikakubali nikaenda kujaribu, kweli nikaenda nikajaribu nikaonekana naweza,” said Mama Kayai.

Her relationship With Mzee Ojwang
She described her husband on set, Mzee Ojwang as a fun loving person and easy to work with.
“Mzee Ojwang alikuwa si mtu anajua kukasirika, na saa ile amekasirika ata hujui, yeye alikuwa mtu wa furaha, unakosana na yee dakika moja hiyo dakika ingine unaona yuko tu kama kawaida yake,” stated Mama Kayai.
She also added that the name ‘Mama Kayai’ was bequeathed to her by the program’s producer the late Ken Mutahi.
Not Ojwang’s Real Wife
She revealed that she’s not Mzee Ojwang’s wife as most people purport however she added that both families enjoy a cordial relationship and are neighbors.
“Familia yake ni marafiki zangu, familia yangu ni rafiki na familia ya Mzee Ojwang, tulikua karibu na Mzee Ojwang sana, bibi ya Mzee Ojwang yuko anaitwa Agusta Wanjiru yuko ata saa hii tunaongea nayeye ni jirani yangu apa nje maanake niliponunua hapa naye pia nilimvutavuta akanunua apo opposite,” said Mama Kayai.
The Creative Industry Is A Lucrative Venture
She further added that entertainment pays and artists should learn to save invest wisely.
Highest Achievement
Her biggest achievement is building herself a house which has a few rental units that generates income.
