Kenya has today joined the world in celebrating mother’s day a day dedicated in honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
Last week Ghetto radio beauties started a campaign under the hash tag #AsanteMamaKE to appreciate mothers living in slum areas.
The two day campaign was aimed at appreciating mothers who may not be able to celebrate themselves today.
The team toured Nairobi’s Githurai, Mathare, Kayole and Kiambiu area.
Mathare’s Amina Agushe Mohamed received a special mother’s day hamper for her fight for women’s rights in the area.
Amina says she has fought for the girl child for the past thirteen years and even with the threats on her life, her spirit has never been deterred.
Another lucky mother was 22 year old Mary Wangare, a mother of four who sells vegetables by the road side to fend for her kids.
Wangare says that life has not been easy for her as she was recently evicted from her house due to rent arrears. Her husband also walked out of the relationship forcing her to raise their four kids alone.
The Asante Mama KE campaign team also toured Kawangware, Mukuru, Kibera and Kangemi areas.
