Kenya’s Boxing Team, Hit Squad Close Win At The AFBC Championships

Kenya’s boxing team, The Hit Squad almost came to a win at the Africa Boxing Championships as three of them powered their way into the finals of the annual boxing extravaganza held at Maputo, Mozambique.

The team’s captain Nick “Commander” Okoth (light weight) and his assistant Elizabeth Andiego (heavy weight) bagged silver medals after fighting against Andrew Chilata and of Morocco Khadija Mardi respectively.

Feather weight Samuel Njau also stormed a silver medal after battling it out against Mozambique’s Rugoberto Sigauque.

Boniface Mugunde settled for a bronze after crashing out in the semi finals while Shaffi Bakari, David Karanja, Amina Martha and Christine Ongare all bowed out in the early stages of the annual boxing championship.

For their efforts, Okoth, Andiego and Njau pocketed Sh602,000 each while Mugunde bagged Sh300,000.

The team returns tomorrow ( Tuesday).

Record number of eleven countries earned gold medals in the new edition of the AFBC African Men’s & Women’s Elite Boxing Championships which came to a close on Sunday 18th September.

Mozambique team won five gold medals, Algeria and Zambia both earned four gold medals and proved amazing performance in this championship. Among the 24 participating nations, 18 claimed at least one medal in Maputo.
