Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet won the gold medal in the Olympic 5,000 meters race.

She has been among the women in Paris after winning the race that caused 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon to be stripped of her silver medal before it was returned.

The 24-year-old athlete crossed the finish line in 14 minutes and 28.56 seconds ahead of Kipyegon who took second place.

Kipyegon’s Silver Reinstated

Kipyegon was initially stripped of her silver medal after allegedly blocking Ethiopian athlete Gudaf Tsegay when they collided in the 5000m race.

However, Kipyegon was eventually returned the medal after complaining to the authorities.

“I was in front and she tried to come in front and I told her (please) you will push me inside, come slowly I will excuse you and she kept pushing and she put me in an awkward situation. I did not push anyone,” Kipyegon said.

Kipyegon will begin her defense of the 1,500m title on Tuesday at 11:05, aiming to secure three consecutive victories in this distance

“I will immediately shift focus to the 1500m because it’s coming up tomorrow( referring to Tuesday) in the morning. I’m disappointed but I will now focus on my race tomorrow,” Kipyegon added.

5000m Gold Champion Striving For a Double Victory

The newly crowned Olympic champion, Chebet, will be striving for a double victory when she faces the relentless Hassan, the reigning 10,000m champion, in the 24-lap race on Friday.

Meanwhile, Kenyan 800m champion Mary Moraa won the bronze medal in the women’s 800m final, while Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma won silver behind England’s Keely Hodgkinson who won gold in the race.
