Journalists in Kiambu county have today held peaceful protest, following the shooting of Nakuru based Kameme TV journalist Catherine Wanjeri, on Tuesday during the Gen Z protest in Nakuru County.

The frustrated journalists matched through the streets in Kiambu town while carrying placards and chanting slogans that condemned police brutality and shooting towards the members of the forth estate while on duty.

In a statement issued to the press,the  members of the forth estate from Kiambu, claimed that the police officer who shot the Kameme TV journalist was purposely aiming on harming her, adding that she was wearing  a recognizable press uniform of the Media Council of Kenya yet she was still shot twice in the thigh.

“It is worth noting, that Ms Wanjeri, was donning the Media Council of Kenya press jacket which is clearly visible when she was shot twice in the thigh,which raises questions on whether the shooter was hell-bent on harming the journalist intentionally which we think so,” part of the statement read.

The journalists demanded that the officer or officers involved be arrested and prosecuted for an attempted murder.According to them, this was not the first time law enforcement officers have attacked journalist while on duty.

They further urged the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), to move with speed and apprehend  Catherine’s shooter as soon as possible

David Omwoyo Condemn Police

David Omwoyo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Media Council of Kenya, has strongly condemned the act and called upon IPOA to conclude investigations and bring the police terrorizing journalists to justice.

Omwoyo added that journalists play a very crucial role in informing the public and holding powerful institutions accountable and should be allowed to carry out their duties freely and safely, as enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution.

” To bring an end to this impunity, we call on the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conclude investigations and bring the police terrorizing journalists to justice,” Omwoyo stated.
