Lindi ward Member of County Assembly Samson Ochieng’ has vowed to push for the establishment of a fire station in Kibera slums in a bid to deal with the fire incidents in the area.
Speaking in Lindi on Tuesday, Jera stated that the fire assembly will help curb fire emergencies in the area.
The nearest fire station attending to Kibra residents is located in the Central Business District.
“The truth is that we usually experience a challenge when there is fire an most of the time, the fire fighters arrive late because of traffic jam but we have agreed as Kibera MCAs to establish a fire station in Jamuhuri. This is because there is enough space and there will be no heavy traffic jam in case of an emergency,” said Jera.

Illegal Fire Connections
According to Jera majority of fire incidents have been caused by illegal connections of electricity and negligence from residents of Kibera.
“Most of the time fire incidents are usually caused by illegal power connections done by quack electricians and some few cases of negligence in some of the houses like gas and stove explosions,” he added.
Jere was addressing a number of Kibra residents who had showed up to apply for IDs.
At least four fire incidents were reported last week in Kibra with the biggest one being the Toi market on Sunday morning.
