A number students from Kibera slums who completed their high school education last year have registered their disappointment with government of its intentions to increase University Fee.

Speaking to Ghetto Radio Kayugira Gasvyith a former candidate says that the fee increment is a clear intention of the government to deny them the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

“I want to condemn the decision that the ministry of education took of increasing university fee. Personally I wanted to take education but I have seen that the cheapest university is Mount Kenya which charges Ksh. 120,000 per year. I cannot afford the Ksh. 120,000 again the ministry said that it will not give scholarships to private universities,” Said Kayugira.

Students opt to take technical courses

Kayugirah says that the proposed hiked university fees have already seen many of them abandon dreams of going to the university to take up technical courses.

“Some have opted to go in technical institutions while others have opted for kmtc and other colleges and those who cannot raise school fees have decided to sell drugs for them in raising school fees while others are now drug users. So the Government should re think on their decision,” he added.

He is warning that most of the students risk sinking into drug abuse if the school fee issue is not properly addressed.

Universities are set to increase fees from Ksh. 16,000 to Ksh. 48,000 for new government sponsored students joining in September.

However continuing students will pay fees until they complete their university education.
