Driver’s Condition

According to a passenger who spoke to Ghetto Radio, the driver’s intoxication was apparent. “We boarded this matatu from Kibera with hopes of reaching town safely. However, the driver was speeding uncontrollably, and those near him were shouting for him to stop.

The driver is so drunk that he can barely walk,” the passenger stated.

The driver’s condition, described as being too drunk to walk, added to the passengers’ fears that the situation could have been far worse if not for the collision with another vehicle.

Sacco’s Response

George Onyachi, an official from Kiragi Sacco, condemned the driver’s behavior and promised corrective measures. “Our sacco has strict guidelines for driver conduct. This incident is unacceptable, and we will ensure that legal actions are pursued. We will also report the driver’s conduct to the NTSA to ensure appropriate penalties are applied,” Onyachi said.

This accident occurs against a backdrop of increasing road traffic fatalities.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), there have been 1,189 road traffic deaths so far this year, a 60-person increase compared to the 1,129 deaths recorded in 2023.

The Kiragi bus accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and driver behavior.

With rising fatalities and instances of intoxicated driving, both authorities and transport companies face growing pressure to implement stricter safety measures and enforce regulations effectively.
