Kisumu county government boosts sporting activities within the county by providing sport kits

The Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has distributed sport wear and equipment’s to nine wards, bringing the no. of recipient to 13 wards that have benefited from the scheme.

The wards that benefited from the scheme include Nyalenda B, Central Nyakach, Kolwa East, Market /Milimani, Kabonyo Kanyagwal, North Kisumu, Kajulu, Ahero and East Seme.

While being presenting trophies won by the County Government having participated in various sporting activities, Governor Nyong’o said that the purpose of equipping the teams in the County is to enhance performance during training and competition.

“This financial year the number of recipient per ward was increased to 19 amounting to Ksh. 23,850,000 compared to the previous years.

In 2020/2021 the County procured sports equipment worth a total of Ksh. 8,900,000 which were issued to eight wards.

We are spending resources on supporting talents at ward levels,” says governor Nyong’o.

Nyong’o also assured that his government will support county teams in terms of training and competition, while 20% will go to the procurement of sports gear.

“My government has embarked on an aggressive infrastructure development agenda in terms of both construction of new facilities and upgrading the old ones across the county. We take sports very seriously because Kisumu is the home of talents,”added the county boss.

The governor also appreciated the county sportsmen and women who have made Kisumu stand as a home of heroes and heroines.

He said that the county has produced many celebrated International sportsmen and women especially in soccer, hockey, basketball, boxing and tennis.

“We have participated in national sports competition and we have won trophies, the latest being inter-county sports competition- Kicosca that was held in Embu in October last year,” says Nyong’o.

The Kisumu team collected 14 trophies and they were number two overall out of 47 counties at the Kicosca games.

The governor further noted that twenty five of the county players have been selected to join the Kenyan team at the East African Local Authorities sports (EALASCA) games to be held in Eldoret from 7th to 13th March.

Under person’s with disability category, Nyong’o says  Kisumu continues to shine saying that is six of the deaf athletes were selected to join the national team that was preparing for the 2022 Brazil Deaf Olympics.
