Kisumu County Issues Warning To Individuals With Structures On Wetlands


The county government of Kisumu has asked individuals with buildings and structures on Kisumu wetlands to bring them down.

The county government through the city Manager Abala Wanga also asked the Kisumu County Lands department to stop issuance of title deeds on wetland areas.

While presiding over the Wednesday World Wetlands Day celebration at Dunga Kisumu city Manager Abala Wanga stated that they had notices on those living on wetlands and once the county does approval on the bills then they will bring the structures down.

“We are not pleading with anybody, if you know that you are on wetlands, we have issued you with public notices. This is the third notice we are going to issue because once the county government does approvals on cabinet wetlands and we gazette them. Then you know whether you have a storey building we will bring it down to conserve this area,” warned Wanga.


“How does the body issue land documents on wetlands and then someone comes claims and starts putting up a building?” he posed.

He also added that the county government has draft regulations and if found burning the wetlands then the individual will be charged for criminal identity.

Kisumu CECM for Water, Environment and Sanitation Salmon Orimba confirmed that the city has four wetlands including Ombeyi, Nyando, Dunga and Nyamthoyi.

“We are doing this because of its benefits, wetlands act as a source of water, it holds water during flooding, wetlands act as a source of water purifications and filtering air. They are also habitats for thousands of species of aquatic and terrestrial plants,” explained Orimba.

Orimba also pointed out that as a ministry, they discourage strongly the encroachment of individuals into wetlands.

“We have the legal instrument headed by NEMA and county departments of environment and Natural resources committed where we take to court, sensitive people and we have enforcement meted on those who want to encroach into wetlands,” he added.
