Kisumu Man Dies In Police Custody
Human Rights Activists in Kisumu have sounded an alarm over the death of a man who allegedly died in police custody on Monday.
Boniface Ogutu an activist from Kisumu claims that the deceased Eric Atito aged 32 years died at Holo Police Post.
“I want to use the strongest term possible to really condemn the mysterious death of Eric Atito who is alleged to have died in police custody. Why am I saying this, after he was apprehended, the deceased called his brother and informed him of his arrest,” says Ogutu.
Ogutu however claims that the police say that Atito was killed by a mob over attempted rape.
“How he ended up dying with injuries and signs of brutality I think it is up to the police to explain,” added the Human rights defender.
He further questioned why the police put him in their custody instead of rushing him to the hospital if it were mob justice.
In May last year, another suspect Maurice Ochieng allegedly died under mysterious circumstances in the same police post.
“This is the second time we are witnessing another death. A similar case happened last year. Am calling upon duty bearers, IPOA and the Inspector General of Police to investigate the matter,” appeals Ogutu.
A police officer who spoke to Ghetto Radio on condition of anonymity however insisted that the deceased died from injuries he got from the mob justice.
“The deceased was accused of attempting to rape a 24 year-old woman but when she raised an alarm, the public attacked him .The police were called, rescued him but died on the way to the hospital,” said the officer.
