Kisumu Youths benefit from a Coaching Clinic ahead of Nelson Mandela Tournament

Winam Rugby League club in Kisumu today organized a coaching clinic a head of December 2021 Nelson mandela Tournament.

Winam Rugby League club is the first affiliate of Kenya Rugby League Federation within the lake Region and has also participated in rugby matches in Nairobi.

Those attended the clinic are youths from five slums estates within Kisumu that is Nyalenda, Obunga, manyatta , Railways, Carwash .

The team also comprises of young youths below the age of 18 years old.

Speaking to Ghetto Radio, Winam Rugby League club president Erick Okioma says they started the club to engage the youths to avoid social injustices within the slums.

“Today we are here for a rugby clinic where we target youths within the slums. We expect a win come December during the tournament we are planning.

It will be a big one as this is the first affiliation of Kenya Rugby within Nyanza region,” said Okioma.

Okioma said he also focuses to engage the youths on sensitizing them during the clinic on HIV/ AIDS and also create awareness on Tuberculosis.

“This tournament will mainly involve youths as you can see we have small gent and primary kids.

Today I also focus on giving out Condoms to the aged and create awareness on HIV/AIDS and TB.

This is what I shall do even during our December tournament,” he added.

Kisumu Winam Rugby League club captain Paul Maxwel who has 12 years’ experience in Rugby says he believes come December they will win the tournament.

“This is the first Rugby league team from the lakeside and with the experience I have and the clinic we have been attending, am sure we will win the Tournament,” Maxwel said.

The team was majorly formed to fight slum social injustices, drug abuse and creation of awareness concerning various diseases.

The league’s president Mr. Okioma appealed to the government to create playing ground for upcoming talents, as he says Kisumu County has no good playing ground for Rugby and other games.

Under 18 years old Winam Rugby League club captain Kennedy Otieno says he has prepared his team well and they are ready for the games.
