Playoffs for the Koth Biro Tournament are set for Wednesday 16th at the Umeme Sports Grounds in Ziwani, Nairobi
According to one of the organizers, Charles Opiyo, they received an excess number of teams by the last hour of the deadline which was set for last week Friday and the playoffs are for cutting on the excess teams so as to have the desired number of only 32 teams participating in this season’s matches.
The last minute rush of registration saw the tournament registering up to 52 teams, 16 being already qualified from last season and 16 more needed from the playoffs.
“We had a successful meeting with all the teams that registered and we set the playoffs for Wednesday. We will also have a draw for the group stage on the very day,” says Charles.
The opening match is still set for Saturday 19th November followed by the next one on 20th.
Koth Biro final abandoned after chaos at Ziwani grounds
Chaos rocked the Koth Biro final on Sunday 6th February 2022 at the dusty Ziwani grounds in Nairobi, leading to the abandonment of the match during post-match penalties.
Organisers decided to award the two sides- Borrusia FC and Leads United- Sh200, 000 each for purposes of harmony.
Initially, the top team in the oldest offseason tournament -that attracted more than 40 teams- was to receive Sh300, 000, while the runners-up was to pocket Sh100, 000.
No team was awarded the trophy since the two teams tied and the clash was supposed to be decided in the penalties.
Leads eyeing the trophy at the 44th Edition
Despite the chaos that drew them away from earning the championship title, Leads United hailing from Kangemi is back for this year’s season with hopes of snatching the title from Eastlands and taking it home to Westlands.
Wiston Issah who is the coach for Leads United mentions that his boys are psyched up and ready to finish their incomplete mission.
“Last year’s finals were a bad experience since my boys were focused but sadly their dream was not achieved according to our objectives toward the tournament.
According to him the new set of rules is what motivated them to try the tournament once more.
“The organizers have laid out a number of rules to ensure that we do not have a repeat of chaos from the previous season and that really motivated us to give it a shot. Our mission is to take the title to Westlands.”
Borrusia FC has been barred from participating in this year’s tournament due to the previous indiscipline from their fans.
