The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education now wants school girls who have given birth to be given six months off school to nurse their babies.
KUPPET Kisumu Branch Secretary Zablon Awange the six months will help them settle down in their new roles as mothers before resuming education.
“School girls who have given birth should be given six months maternity leave before reporting back to school,” said Awange.
Awange further states that many of the students who have reported to school immediately after giving birth lack concentration hence affecting their learning.
He further states that the six months off the education system might scare other girls from getting pregnant.
The teachers union now wants the Ministry of Education and that of Interior to support the proposal and also come up with measures of reducing teenage pregnancies in school.
