Diabetes is a condition that happens when your blood sugar (glucose) is too high. It develops when your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or any at all or when your body isn’t responding to the effects of insulin properly.
Cabinet Secretary of Health Susan Nakhumicha revealed that 4% of Kenyans are under treatment of diabetes.
Serfine Achieng while interviewing Dr.Paul Ngugi at Citizen TV on Health and Lifestyle morning show,the consultant Diabetologist says that diabetes is a disease for the rich in the third world countries and the marginalized in the first world countries.
”As we talk about 4% we must see that there are more than four counties in which diabetes are being restricted i mean counties that are more urbanized and more settled,”
”That is Mount Kenya Region,Kisii Highland,Taita Highlands,Coast Region and Nairobi which you find is more than 4%.And that is why we keep on saying that diabetes is disease for the rich and affluent in the third world countries and the marginalized in the first world countries.”He said.
Dr.Paul Ngugi noted that the main cause of diabetes is lifestyle in Africa because Africans eat what they can afford.
”The lifestyle in the developing country tends to be lazier and am sorry to use that word because they take excess calories,they eat salad and those food they can afford.”He noted.
Causes of Diabetes
Too much glucose circulating in your bloodstream causes diabetes, regardless of the type.
However, the reason why your blood glucose levels are high differs depending on the type of diabetes.
Some of the causes of Diabetes includes;
Insulin resistance: Type 2 diabetes mainly results from insulin resistance. Insulin resistance happens when cells in your muscles,fat and liver don’t respond as they should to insulin. Several factors and conditions contribute to varying degrees of insulin resistance, including obesity, lack of physical activity, diet, hormonal imbalances, genetics and certain medications.
Autoimmune disease: Type 1 diabetes happen when your immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in your pancreas.
Hormonal Imbalance:During pregnancy, the placenta releases hormones that cause insulin resistance. You may develop gestational diabetes if your pancreas can’t produce enough insulin to overcome the insulin resistance cause Type 2 diabetes.
Pancreatic damage: Physical damage to your pancreas from a condition, surgery or injury can impact its ability to make insulin, resulting in Type 3c diabetes
He also added that Diabetes does not come alone it come with various diseases which if not reacted upon a person might die.
”Diabetes doesn’t come alone.It comes with diseases like Hypertension,obesity and NARDS diseases,”
”All these diseases can cause severe complications.”He concluded.
