Kibera residents in Nairobi County are counting losses after their houses got flooded following the heavy rains that pounded the city overnight.
More than 30 houses in Lindi area were flooded with the rain water with some household equipment getting swept out.
Kibra Social Worker Humphrey Lando says that they have however managed to evacuate some residents to safer grounds.
“Beds and other household stuff have been swept by these raging floods. some houses are almost submerged in the floods but luckily no one has be injured or killed in the floods,” said Lando.
Two people were late last year swept by floods in the same area after heavy nights.
Lando has criticized the residents for insisting on staying in the slums with the hope of receiving handout from donors while in turn endangering their lives.
“Our problem with Kibra is that these people love cheap houses and handouts from donors. That is why they insist on living in houses next to the river. But it is a time bomb,” warned Lando.
