MAKONGENI RESIDENTS RESIST PLANNED EVICTION TO PAVE WAY FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT

Thousands of Makongeni Residents in Nairobi could become homeless should the County government of Nairobi effect an eviction notice.

Those who spoke to Ghetto Radio news decried the eviction without formal notice saying it was done in bad taste. 

The residents say that they have not received any compensation or formal communication on how they are supposed to vacate to pave way for the affordable housing project. They now want the National government together with the County government to give them clear communication with regards to compensation in order to ease their relocation.

“Tunataka kumuambia Rais kuwa we are not against the affordable housing project, but tunataka sharia ifuatwe….tunataka mabadilkiko kama wakaazi wa Makongeni lakini cha muhimu kwanza tunataka sisi tusikizwe,” Samuel Maina chairman Makongeni Residents Association said.

The residents are also calling on the government to upgrade the houses in phases to avoid being relocated to another place citing having school going children who are currently studying in the area.

They argue that relocating to another place will be a challenge due to financial constraints further calling on the government to set up a meeting with them in order to resolve the matter amicably.

“Tunaambia PS Charles Hinga we are very much ready to negotiate with the Government lakini tusikizwe….these houses are highly subsidized because the owners of these houses are Pensioners na ndio wazazi wa hawa vijana,” he added.
