  • The young winger joins a star-studded team and will look to contribute to City’s continued domestic and European success under Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City announced on Thursday the signing of Brazilian winger Savinho from French club Troyes.

Savinho, who made an impression when on loan at Girona the previous season, signed a five-year contract with City for an estimated €40 million.

Despite being registered with Troyes, a Ligue 2 club, Savinho, 20, never made a game for the team.

He first signed with Atletico Mineiro in 2022, and he later had loans from PSV Eindhoven and Girona. He finished third in La Liga and helped Girona qualify for the Champions League for the first time in club history with nine goals and ten assists.

Savinho announced his joy at joining City in a statement, referring to them as “the best team in the world right now.” He believes Pep Guardiola to be one of the best managers of all time, so he is excited to work with him. Savinho is excited for the new challenge of competing with some of the world’s greatest players in the Premier League.

However, the transfer calls into question the equity of ownership arrangements involving many clubs.  The City Football Group (CFG) has ownership interests in 12 clubs spread over five continents.

UEFA gave the go-ahead for City and Girona to compete in the Champions League earlier this month. Additionally, they approved the participation of Nice and Manchester United in the Europa League, both of which are owned by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos firm.

Savinho’s transfer to City demonstrates the advantages of CFG’s multi-club structure, which lets young players grow in several leagues before making the jump to the Premier League. He gets the chance to shine on one of the biggest stages in football after demonstrating his talent through his achievements at Girona.

This transfer not only strengthens City’s squad but also underscores the club’s strategic use of its global network to nurture and acquire top talents. As Savinho joins the English champions, fans and analysts alike will be watching to see how he adapts to the demands of the Premier League and contributes to City’s pursuit of more trophies.
