Man suffers injuries after he was hit by teargas canister

A middle aged man  in Kisumu is nursing injuries after he was hit by a teargas canister thrown a police officer at the Agakhan roundabout yesterday.

James Ambasa broke his upper jaw after he was hit by the cannister that was allegedly thrown directly at him.

Kisumu Human Rights Activist Audi Ogada says that Ambasa who is currently unable to talk, was waiting for a matatu to go home when the cannister thrown by the police hit him.

 It is alleged that the police officers in the landcruiser were on their special operation to enforce COVID-19 at the time of incident.

“Police officer were trying to arrest some members of the public who were trying to catch up with curfew hours. The manner with which the police acted did not please them which later resulted into a war between the two parties and teargas was thrown injuring several people, Ambasa being one of them,” said Ogada.

“The teargas cannister was thrown directly at him hitting his upper jaw and I have confirmed that the guy lost some teeth. He also has some injuries in the mouth but the doctor will tell us the extent of the injuries”, he explained.

He further warned that continioned the police against random throwing of teargas cannisters to members of the public.

“Up to now, no action has been taken against these rogue officers. The Deputy OCPD Kisumu central says that he has not received any reports concerning that incident and that he is waiting for junior officers to brief him,” said Ogada.

Ambasa is being treated at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.
