Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are set to compete in the Europa League final this Wednesday. The highly anticipated match will take place at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao.

For both English clubs, this final represents a crucial opportunity to salvage what have been disappointing seasons in the Premier League. Victory in the Europa League not only secures a prestigious trophy but also guarantees a coveted spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Champions League Entry Worth Millions for Both Clubs

Securing a Champions League berth carries significant financial implications, potentially injecting up to £100 million ($133 million) into the winning club’s coffers. This financial boost is particularly vital for both Manchester United and Tottenham, who have endured challenging campaigns domestically.

Manchester United currently languishes in 16th place in the Premier League, having suffered a staggering 18 league defeats. This marks their worst performance in the top flight since 1974, a season that culminated in their relegation. Tottenham Hotspur find themselves just one position above, in 17th place. They have recorded a club-record 21 league losses, making this potentially their worst season since 1978.

The intense focus of both teams on their Europa League campaigns has arguably contributed to their struggles in the Premier League. Manchester United are currently on an eight-game winless streak in the league, their longest such run in Premier League history. Their most recent league defeat came against Chelsea.

Similarly, Tottenham have experienced a slump in form, losing five of their last six Premier League matches, with their latest loss occurring against Aston Villa.

History and Head-to-Head Set Up Tense Clash

Tottenham Hotspur have a history in the Europa League, having lifted the trophy twice before. Their last major European silverware came in 1984. The club has endured a lengthy trophy drought, spanning 17 years. They came close to European glory in 2019, reaching the Champions League final but ultimately losing to Liverpool.

Tottenham’s current manager, Ange Postecoglou, believes that this Europa League final could represent a pivotal moment in the club’s trajectory. “This game has the potential to be a truly significant turning point for us,” Postecoglou stated.

Manchester United have also faced a period of decline in recent years. Since the retirement of their legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, in 2013, the club’s form has been inconsistent. However, they did achieve success in domestic cup competitions under former manager Erik ten Hag, winning the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Current manager Ruben Amorim has faced a difficult start to his tenure. Since taking charge in November, he has managed to secure only six wins in 26 Premier League games. Despite their league struggles, Manchester United have shone in the Europa League. Their impressive run to the final included victories over Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao. They also staged a dramatic comeback against Lyon in the quarterfinals, ultimately winning 7-6 on aggregate.

Amorim acknowledges the need for significant changes within the club, irrespective of the final outcome. “The final is not our most pressing issue,” he conceded. “We have deeper, more fundamental problems that need to be addressed.”

Interestingly, Tottenham Hotspur have had the upper hand in their encounters with Manchester United this season, securing three victories. They have won twice in the Premier League and once in the League Cup. Ange Postecoglou has an unbeaten record against Manchester United in five managerial meetings. “It would be unusual for us to lose to them four times in a row,” Amorim commented on this head-to-head record.

Manchester United possess experienced players within their ranks, including Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. “These are players who know what it takes to win trophies,” observed former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, drawing a contrast with Tottenham’s recent lack of silverware.

Despite Manchester United’s disappointing league form, it is likely that Ruben Amorim will remain as the club’s manager. Their strong Europa League campaign has provided a degree of stability. Ange Postecoglou, on the other hand, faces potentially greater pressure. He publicly stated his ambition to win a trophy in his second season at Tottenham.

Failure to do so in this final could potentially jeopardize his position. Tottenham will be without key players James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall, and Dejan Kulusevski due to injuries for the final. However, their captain and star forward, Son Heung-min, is fit and available for selection.

Tottenham reached the Europa League final after navigating a challenging semi-final tie against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, played in Norway. Ange Postecoglou expressed his excitement ahead of the final.

“Winning this competition could upset a lot of people’s expectations,” he remarked. “I am not particularly concerned about our league form at this moment. This final promises to be a great contest.”
