Man, Wife Sentenced To Life Imprisonment For Trafficking Bhang

A court in Meru has sentenced a couple to life imprisonment after they were found guilty of trafficking bhang worth Ksh. 3.09 Million.

James Muthiora and his wife Fridah Karimi were also sentenced to another five years or pay a fine of Ksh. 4.5 Million after they were found guilty of another count related to trafficking of bhang.

Meru Law Courts Principal Magistrate Thomas Muraguri handed the two the hefty sentence saying that they violated the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act.

On another court Muraguri stated that the man and wife were sentenced after the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that they were in possession of the narcotics.

“In addition to the third count, the accused person is sentenced to life imprisonment for being in possession of utensils used in connection with the preparation of narcotic drugs contrary to the law,” said Muraguri.

Muthiora and Karimi were charged alongside three other people who were set free by the court.

Their lawyer has termed the sentence as harsh and has vowed to move to the High Court to appeal the ruling.
