Informal settlement areas in Kisumu County have been mapped out as areas with the highest prevalence of Tuberculosis.
Erick Okioma a convener of the Nelson Mandela CBO, an organization that does sensitization and awareness of on TB specifically mentioned Mayatta, Nyalenda and Obunga and Bandani slums as areas with the highest prevalence of TB.
According to Okioma, this is because of the overcrowding and the poorly ventilated houses.
“These areas include Nyalenda, Manyatta ,Obunga upto Bandani. These areas have a high prevalence because of poverty and overcrowding that is giving the disease enough room to spread,” stated Okioma.
Okioma has also asked the National government to invest more on Tuberculosis treatment to ensure rapid supply of medical supplies.
He says that currently the government heavily depends on donors hence the hitches in supply.
According to Okioma, this has in turn risked the lives of people living with TB.
“You realize that the world’s vision is to end TB by 2030. So as a community we are stepping up to create awareness,” said Okioma.
Sharon Obilo a TB champion says that some of the TB deaths are as a result of ignorance. Haing lost her mother to TB in what she describes as ignorance, Obilo has decided to sensitize her community on TB to enable people go for treatment.
