Unionised lecturers and all staffs at Maseno University have commenced their strike to push the management to honour their collective bargaining agreement dated 2020-2021
Dr. Stephen Onyango UASU Chapter Secretary advised the lecturers to boycott classes until the university cedes to their demands.
“Today is the day we are going to fix this institution. Maseno is a public institution, On 11th this month the LIECT met with the three deputy vice chancellors of this university and finance officer…The decision to get this far is largely due to the failure by the university to honour the pact on paying us the money,” said Dr. Onyango.
They say that the institution released pay advice which all members of the staff saw and when they asked about the tax component due to overtaxing on the staffs the pay advice was later pulled down.
” After seeing the pay advice released by the institution, when we asked about the tax component because we Maseno staffs we are over taxed every year , all lecturers from grade 12 have overpayment to KRA to sh.40000 due to an incompetent bursar,” he added.
They added that after the pay advice was pulled down the institution bursar told them that the school has no money.
This comes a few days after the government released huge capitation of over Sh.144 Million for salaries and additional of Sh. 77Million for arrears.
” The government released a capitation of over sh.144 M for our salaries with additional sh. 77m for arrear. Maseno university admits 6000 students every year where do the institution take the money. Kisumu Hotel were part of the people to be paid but where is their money, pay us,” says Pius Opiyo KUSU Maseno branch Chair.
The unionised lecturers and staffs further cried of rampant corruption and nepotism witnessed within the varsity.
” We want the nation to know that there is serious corruption going on here, there is serious Nepotism going on here. This is where interviews are organized for select people, we cannot have a university where a VC just promotes his brother to be a professor yet he has not taught anywhere in the country,” said Dr. Onyango.
They say some of their members have stayed in one position for more than 13 years while newly recruited staffs enjoy privileges.
They have requested the government institutions, EA and , DCI to move with speed and investigate the matter as they won’t relent till justice prevails to all workers.
