Matatu operators operating within Nairobi CBD have called off their planed strike that was to kick off today.
This is after a consultative meeting between the operators and transport committee Nairobi County Assembly.
The operators are opposed to new charges popularly known as seasonal tickets saying they are not privy to it and that they were not consulted.
According to Matatu Welfare Association Chairman Dickson Mbugua the new charges were first enacted by former Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero but failed after they realised it could not work.
‘‘ We are not happy as a sector, these new charges failed in 2013 because they are not realistic,we even contested that in court, we are still consulting we shall give our members the way forward.’’ Mbugua said.
Meanwhile chairperson transport committee of Nairobi County Assembly Joyce Muthoni has asked the operators to have trust in the assembly where all policies are being formulated.
‘‘We have agreed to look into this matter and give way forward …we want also to encourage operators not to fall in traps of cartels who sell stages in the CBD.’’ She said.
