Mathare Women Brave Cold Mornings, Walk Long Distances In Search Of Water
A number of women in Mathare’s Mabatini area are now being forced to walk long distances in serach of water following the biting water shortage in the area.
The women wake up as early as 4 am and walk several kilometers with jerrycans in their hands in search of the essential commodity.
Emily Nyalesu says the early search of water has also put their lives in danger since they are not assured of their security in the robbery prone areas.
Nyalesu says that carrying the jerrycans on their backs has also given them back and chest problems.
“A litre of jerrycan currently retails at Ksh. 50, we have to wake up very early to get this water and carrying the jerrycans everyday is giving us back problems,” narrated Nyalesu.
Currently a 20 Litre jerrycan of water is being sold at Ksh. 50 in Mabatini.
Nyalesu also says that area MCA Wilfred Odalo has neglected their pleas to help them solve the water problem that has persisted since the beginning of the year.
Sources close to Ghetto Radio state that Odalo is among the several Nairobi MCAs planning to vie for parliamentary seats in the countryside hence his lack of concern for the people of Mabatini.
