Mathare Youths Storm Meeting Demand Kazi Mtaani Jobs

By Allan Otieno

Youths in Mathare Kossovo were forced to stop community  meeting at Kossovo grounds to demand job opportunities of Kazi Mtaani program.

The youth claim that job opportunities are being distributed by area village elders and a clique of individuals at the chief’s office.

A meeting that was held on Wednesday turned murky and village elders had to be whisked away by security officers to cool the tension that was rising from the youths.

‘‘They are issuing these opportunities to their relatives without considering youths from this area some have gone to the  extent of fixing relatives from rural areas. They must tell the reason for our exclusion,’’ they demanded.

Meanwhile Gitathuru elders defended themselves saying there is no favoritism.

‘‘We want you to tell the truth some of you did not apply for the jobs,’’ they said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta launched Kazi Mtaani  Programme last year to cushion the most vulnerable youths in the informal settlements from the effects of COVID-19 pandemic.
