Community Health Workers in Mukuru Kwa Njenga now want the Nairobi County Government to disburse stipends to facilitate their daily operations.

According to Patricia Mutongoi, Mukuru Community Promoter, there is need for Governor Johnson Sakaja to consider Mukuru CHVs for employment in the Environment Department as reward for long-term volunteer work lot to the community.

“The dignity of the CHWs must be protected and efforts and sacrifice rewarded. We want governor Johnson Sakaja to disburse the money to help the grass Health volunteers perform their work with ease,” said Patricia

She added and it would be a noble gesture of giving back to them.

The Community Health Workers  were  speaking  during  joint clean up exercise  in Mukuru slums aimed  at getting  rid of the chocking  filth that have so far clogged  drainage  systems.

Charles Nyamonge, one of the pioneer residents said that the clean-up exercises should be done on a weekly basis with support from the sub-county environment department.

“Clean environment is our rights and we ensure that we keep out estate clean.The environment department but give their support to the initiative, we are willing to do it weekly,” Nyamonge stated.

In the meantime Elphas Liyai a gender activist pleaded with the Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to consider Mukuru youths during the forthcoming NYS recruitment.

He pleaded for leniency in minimum that even though some of youth in slums lacks requisite requirements.

“We want the government  through  CS Kindiki  to be help Mukuru  youths  join National Youths Service, it  would equip youth with skills  to help  the navigate the job market.” Liyai said

The communal clean up exercise comes just a week after cholera outbreak engulfed  estate.
