A section of residents in Nairobi’s Mukuru kwa Njenga slums are sounding an alarm over an abandoned quarry that is being used by children as a swimming pool.

Eric Ambuche says the abandoned quarry has that has collected after it was left open by unknown contractors is being used by children in the area for swimming.

Ambuche says that the abandoned quarry is a death trap that risks killing the area children.

“All these children playing here are children from Mukuru. The main reason why they are playing here is because Mukuru lacks recreational facilities,” said Ambuche.

“The children do not know the danger that lurks in this quarry, because the water here is contaminated and they even risk drowning,” he stated.

He is appealing to the area MP Johnson Mawathe to petition the Nairobi City County on their behalf and have the quarry closed.

Ambuche also wants Mawathe to sanction the opening of the public swimming pool at NCC Primary School in Mukuru to act as a recreational facility for the children.
