At least six bar operators were on Thursday arrested in a multi agency operation conducted on bars in Nairobi’s Kawangware area.
The operation conducted by NACADA, KRA and KEBS also saw four bars shut down and counterfeit goods worth millions of shillings confiscated.
Maurice Kamenderi, Research officer with NACADA says the operation also unearthed a scandal in Kawangware where several bars were using the same license from the Nairobi County government.
“These traders are using one license from the Nairobi County Government. They are disguising themselves as one premise while they are operating many premises,” said Kamenderi.
This is defrauding the government revenue. Therefore we made arrests and they are expected in court,” he stated.
NACADA Chairman Julius Gichiri says the operation will be intensified during the Easter festivities to ensure compliance.
“The inspection which is currently in Nairobi will ensure that compliance with various regulations are followed as we aim to expand to other counties,” said Gichiri.
