Nairobi County Boxing Novices Championship kicked off yesterday 22nd January 2020 at the Githurai round about.
Over 125 boxers from 23 clubs have converged for the event where winners will represent Nairobi County in the National Novices in February 6th to 8th at Charter Hall.
Thailand Boxing Club is the host of the four day event that has attracted a huge following from the residents of Nairobi County.
Speaking to Ghetto Radio Sports organizer and Thailand Boxing Club Coach John Ochieng promised the fans a good event saying that the last edition hosted in the same venue attracted a good number of people who thronged the area to watch the fights.
The games hosted in Thika Highway don’t look like a good place to host the event because of the traffic and the crowd that uses the area.
Ochieng however argues that the area is the only place that has enough space to accommodate the masses despite of the congestion and the environmental hazards.
“This is the only space we have in this are that accommodate more people that throng the area to watch the bouts, the Social hall that was built is very small,” he bemoaned.
More than 150 boxers graced the event which was held last year in the same venue.
Ochieng has appealed to well-wishers to help them fund the event saying that they are struggling to make it a success.
Speaking at the same venue National team Coach Benjamin Musa who is also the Secretary General of Nairobi County said that he hopes to get a good squad to defend the title won by Nairobi last year.
Currently with the National team preparing for Olympics Qualifiers Musa emphasized the importance of the games saying that this is the foundation that builds the National team and as the Head Coach he came to give the organizers and boxers moral support.
