Nairobi County Assembly Kicks Out Mutura From Speaker Race

Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura will not be able to defend his seat after being locked out of the contest for failing to submit a certificate of good conduct.

In a communication released today afternoon by the clerk Edward Gichana, Assembly’s technical committee found out that Mutura and seven others did not meet the set requirements.

Mutura did not submit certificate of good conduct and compliance certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority.

“The application forms for Hon Benson Kang’ara Mutura was not accompanied by current certificate of good conduct but a payment receipt of the certificate was attached. He did not also submit a Tax compliance certificate from KRA,” the committee report reads.

The move paves way for ODMs’ Ken Ng’ondi to clinch the seat in the voting process scheduled for Thursday August 29th.

24 people had collected forms to contest for the seat with only nine returning them for consideration.

Others who were locked out include Brian Mutie, Ahmed Subanea, Arthur Ndung’u, Samuel Mokua, Amimo Austin and Charles Kio.

Meanwhile the UDA MCAs have threatened to block the election exercise tomorrow reading mischief and political witch-hunt. They claim that the Assembly seems to have settled on a candidate.

“The UDA MCAs want to express their sadness and shock because the Clerk seems to have a preferred candidate by imposing unconstitutional requirements so as to lock out other candidates. We will make sure nothing goes on here tomorrow,” Waithaka MCA Antony Kiragu told the media.
