Nairobi West Hospital Performs Kenya’s First Bone Marrow Transplant

Nairobi West Hospital has successfully conducted the first bone marrow transplant.

Nairobi West Hospital, Chief Medical Director Dr. Andrew Kanyi says that they conducted the procedure on the 10th of this month.

According to Kanyi the 55 year old patient is recovering very well post-surgery.

“Margaret is doing very well, she has accepted the cells and is currently in recovery,” said Dr. Kanyi.

A bone marrow transplant is a medical treatment that replaces the bone marrow which is the blood making organ in the body with healthy cells.

According to Kanyi, in the case of the patient, they used a few selected cells from the patient to do the transplant.

“These are circulating cancers and what we are saying is that this technique can be used to control the disease by harvesting some of the normal cells from the same patient and through the use of drugs, the rest of the marrow with the disease is destroyed and replanted on the body,” said Dr. Kanyi.

The technology has been in the world for several year but Nairobi West Hospital is the first hospital in the country to have it.
