The New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday signed a bill legalising the recreational use of marijuana by adults aged 21 and above.
This is after the state Senate and Assembly voted to approve the legislation.
The Senate voted with 40 showing support while 23 were against it, moving to the Assembly where it was approved by 100 votes against 49 during the Tuesday late night session.
The bill further expunges previous marijuana convictions for activities that would be legal under the new law.
“This is a historic day in New York, one that rights the wrongs of the past by putting an end to harsh prison sentences, embraces an industry that will grow the Empire state’s economy and prioritizes marginalized, “said Cuomo.
The bill will create licenses for producers and distributors.
It also permits adults from the ages of 21 and above to buy Cannabis from authorized sellers.
The taxes will be channelled to the New York State Cannabis Revenue Fund which will be split between education, Community Grants Reinvestment Fund and Drug Treatment Fund.
