Olympian Dickson Wamwiri died of depression – friends

Friends of Kenya’s first ever male Taekwondo athlete Dickson Wamwiri Wanjiku who died on Sunday now claim that Wanjiku suffered severe depression that led to his death.

Wamwiri who represented Kenya in the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games died after collapsing in his house in Waithaka, Dagoretti area.

Peter Gichuru a close friend of Wamwiri says that Wamwiri sunk into depression after coming from the Olympics which led to the several seizures he had that eventually killed him.

He says that Wamwiri has been in and out of Kenyatta and Kikuyu Hispitals for quite some time trying to treat the seiures.

“He would get seizures and get rushed to the hospital then gets discharged. Then the seizures would come back,” narrates Gichuru.

Gichuru who used to hang out with Wamwiri says that the Olympian used to lament of the government’s neglect of sportsmen in the country.

“He used to ask, if the government has neglected me and and i am a legend and still the government neglected me, what of the other youths who are just starting out in sports, what will happen to them?” says Gichuru.

Until his death, Wamwiri used to make a living by training young children taekwondo.

“It was not enough but it what he used to push him through life,” stated Gichiuru.

Wamwiri’s body is currently at the Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary.
