Ferdinand Omanyala’s hopes of being the first Kenyan to compete in the 100-meter final of the Olympics were dashed off after he placed eighth in the semifinal at the Stade de France in Paris.

The fastest man in Africa and the second fastest in the world this year, Omanyala, finished second in the race and clocked in a time of 10.08 seconds.

The fastest man in the world and Jamaican favorite, Kishane Thompson, won the heat in a tense semifinal in 9.80 seconds, becoming the quickest qualifier. Fred Kerley of the USA came in second, in 9.84 seconds.

The final will be on Sunday at 10:50 p.m. and will feature Jamaica’s favourite  Kishane  Thompson and the USA trio of Noah Lyles, Kenny Bednarek, Fred Kerley defending Italian champion Marcell Jacobs, South Africa’s Akani Simbine, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, and Jamaica’s Oblique Seville.

Even after a disappointing outcome, Omanyala is still a prominent personality in African sports. As one of the fastest runners of the year, he had high expectations going into the Paris Marathon.

His journey to this point has been remarkable, and Kenya is very proud to have him compete in the semifinals.
