Residents of Nairobi’s Thome estate on Friday woke up to a rude shock following the demolition of a children’s home in the area.
The Hi Jung Children’s home was reportedly demolished by a private developer under the watch of the area MCA and the Nairobi County askaris.
According to the area residents, the children’s home has been in existence in the area for more than 20 years.
“They came with goons and tractors that had private number plates and brought down the children’s home that has served this area quite well,” the residents lamented.
The Hi Jung home is reportedly owned and funded by Koreans. The home has benefitted many needy students who have grown up in the home and pursued their education.
The residents say that dispute over the ownership of the one acre piece of land where children’s home sits started 12 years ago.
“They have been eyeing this piece of land for the past 12 years. And seemingly they colluded with county officials and doctored documents to show that they owned the land.”
The residents are now stuck with the orphans who were housed in the home. The orphans come from the nearby Marurui slums.
The case has been reported at the Marurui Police Station.
