In Summary

  • They have protested 60 meters demolition in the area.
  • Over 600 persons have been displaced.
  • They term the demolition political and uncalled for.

More than 600 people residents of City Cotton Kariobangi South, Embakasi West Constituency will spend nights in cold flowing eviction exercise on riparian land that’s currently under-way.
According to the residents the officers in charge of demolitions in the area have defied the 30 meters directive and are implementing 60 meters on riparian land which is contrary to the law.

They have directed them to vacate immediately a move that has left many homeless.
Hezron Oredo say they were first told to move 30 meters always from riparian land as it was directed but the officers in their own thinking added another 30 meters making it 60 meters a decision which is irrational.
“Sisi initially tuliambiwa tutoe vitu kutoka areas zote 30 meters kutoka riparian land lakini kufikia jana wakacome na policy different that tutoke 60 meters away from riparian land Sasa kufikia Leo watu zaidi ya soo sita hawana makao wengine watala kwa baridi na imagine Kuna watoi wengine pia hawana food.Hii gava gani ina double speak na impunity.” Hezron Oredo City Cotton resident told Ghetto Radio News.

“The way things are it seems politics have taken control because our leaders are all quite except Hon Mwenje whom have shown some tolerance but had done nothing over the matter so far.” Oredo added.

Residents Plea

They have called on the government to provide them with basic essentials including food and shelter.
“Tunaomba usaidizi hii ni crisis noma shule zimefunguliwa lakini watoto huku hawatafungua juu no food na other basic needs.” He said.

Kindiki Demolition Notice

According to Interior Cs Kithure Kindiki the removal is restricted to 30 meters from the river and other riparian lands.

“The Nairobi Regional and County Security Teams are directed to work with the Nairobi City County Government and the Multi-agency Team under the auspices of the National Disaster Operation Centre (NDOC) to ensure the immediate vacation or mandatory evacuation of all persons within the 30-metre riparian land along the Nairobi Rivers (Mathare, Ngong and Nairobi Rivers), and thereafter oversee the removal of all buildings and structures within the riparian land as well as the planning corridor,” Kindiki said.
