Early Childhood Education ECD Teachers in Kibera have asked parents to stop exposing their children to domestic violence.

Sophia Odenyo an ECD teacher in Kibera says that many children exposed to domestic violence by their parents fail to perform well in class.

Odenyo says that she has had cases where children narrate to her how their parents were fighting at home and exchanging some angry words.

“I teach in a nursery school and as a teacher I have heard a lot from children. You can be in class teaching and you  see a sad child if you move close to inquire the reason the child will tell you Baba na mami wakilala wanapigana hata daddy akaambia mami sisi sio watoto wake na mami akamwambia dadi mamake  ni machafu hajui usafi,” says Odenyo.

Verbal abuse

She says verbal abuse is as equal as physical violence since it mentally affects children in school.

“At some point this usually affects child’s performance in class and majority of  pupils who are performing well in class their parents know how to behave and those who perform poorly majority have issues at home ,” she says.

The behavior of parents who expose their children to domestic violence at home is also often noticed when they go to school for parents’ meetings.

“When a parent came to school for parents meeting or inquiries even making calls, at some point teachers may treat him or her according to the way he behaves at home.  Yes they usually came dressed well as if they are going to meet a head of state but we don’t care since we know their dressing does not match with their character,” she added.

Now the parents are being called to behave in a good way before their children during this short Holliday because whatever they are doing at home is being recorded for quality purposes.
