Police in Kisumu have failed to arrest suspected robbers who raided Equity Bank Angawa Branch on Tuesday afternoon.

Nyanza Regional Commissioner Magu Mutindika says that they are however questioning all the staff members who were evacuated from the bank after the stand-off.

“After this, we are going to do a thorough search and if we found anybody whom we suspect to be have been involved in this act appropriate legal action is going to be taken,” says Mutindika.

The thugs held the police at a standoff for more than one hour an incident that further saw them saw them exchange firearms with the police officers.

The thugs are said to have lobbed teargas canisters in the bank before accessing the building.

According to an eyewitness the three people posing as customers suddenly lobbed teargas canisters and ordered staff and customers to lie on the ground.

A number of staff have been safely rescued from the bank as the police hunt for the thugs.

Magu also adds that they are going to deploy multi agency team to monitor the CCTV.

“We have agreed with the Equity bank manager and we are going to deploy multi agency team to help identify these people and from there we will be able to identify them all. There is one shirt inside here and I suspect the owner is at the police station,” he added.

Police say that the suspects had teargas canisters and not firearms.

“On the sound like gun shots, let me say this, those criminals had teargas not guns and we have even the exhibit. We have one unused teargas canister,” said Kisumu Regional Commander Muiruri.
