The police have now revealed the identity of the man behind the M-Pesa con scheme as 25-year-old Benson Masubo Chacha, a former Ministry of Devolution employee.
Chacha is accused of using fake MPesa accounts to demand money from Members of Assembly and other VIPs.
He is believed to be a friend to a former Member of Parliament (MP) where he got most of the MPs’ contacts.
Chege is among a group of lawmakers who complained on the floor of the House last week that they were being blackmailed by a conman who was using her name to solicit cash from them.
Chege said she knew the suspect but the police were reluctant to move in and arrest him.
The National Assembly security committee had to go into private session after Kinoti said he could not divulge further information on the matter in the full glare of the media.
